Faerie Blood

For any posts pertaining to Faerie Blood

I’ve finally gotten my next round of royalties for Faerie Blood and Defiance, and I’m not terribly surprised that they are tiny. To all of you out there who have bought copies of these works this year, though, as always, I thank you for your support!

Along with the royalties, though, I have also gotten the news that Drollerie’s agreement for audio versions of our works has dissolved. So, sadly, this means that there will be no audio version of Faerie Blood for now. If I get any further updates about this, I will be sure to pass the word.

Over in the land of Lament of the Dove, there are still open queries on that. A couple are to agents, but the primary one of interest remains to Carina Press. I’m not expecting pings back from the agents at this point since it’s been long enough on those queries that either they’re not getting back to me, or else they’re so backed up that they’re not going to be able to do so in a timely fashion anyway.

My strategy for querying agents is, I think, going to have to change. I’ve been focusing on querying people who accept email submissions, but since I’ve pretty much exhausted the pool of people I’m interested in, I’m going to have to branch out to sending snailmail. And if Carina says no, print partials or fulls of Lament will be going out, too. But I’ll give it a little longer before Operation Paper Querying will have to go into effect.

Shadow of the Rook is the book that has my attention at the moment, just because Lament is the thing with the biggest active query. Like Lament, Shadow is taking its time organically growing in my brain; I’m only just now inching into Chapter 4, trying to figure out exactly how I’m going to have one of the characters who made it all the way through Book 1 survive for the bulk of Book 2. And I’m pleased to note that while I didn’t write nearly as much as I should have done this weekend, I have nonetheless accomplished some word count!

Written this weekend: 538
Chapter 4 total: 831
Shadow of the Rook total (first draft): 18,259

Although my foray into Great Big Sea video fandom did not go as hoped, I can say that Saturday’s reading at the Wayward did go quite swimmingly!

I was horribly nervous, enough that when I got up to do my bit from Chapter 1, I could feel my knees loosen–and when I got done and back to my seat, my hands were shaking as I tweeted about it. userinfosolarbird says I read a bit too fast, but on the other hand, that actually kind of helped since I’m fairly verbose in style. Reading quickly helped offset that.

I was pleased, too, to note that I got giggles where I wanted them, and no giggles where I shouldn’t have. userinfojennifer_brozek kindly told me later that she enjoyed my reading, and I sold a total of four of the CD copies I’d made of the book, out of the 12 that I’d made Saturday afternoon. (One of them went to userinfotechnoshaman, finally buying a copy of the book; thanks Glenn!)

Also, I must note that I quite enjoyed several of the other stories read. userinfocatrambo had a nice one about a woman who discovers that her coffeemaker is not only sentient, it’s also neurotic, and Nate Crowder actually opened AND closed the proceedings, with two different stories. I liked his superhero one, the one with which he closed the reading. userinfokehrli read two short ones, one of which was quite moving from a genderqueer perspective; props for that. And Ms. Brozek quite aptly demonstrated that, yeah, the phrase “zombie erotica” is every bit as disturbing as you’d expect. ;)

On the whole it was a very enjoyable evening and I was very happy to get the chance to participate. And if anyone new happens by who was at the reading, I hope you enjoyed my contribution!

Courtesy of userinfojennifer_brozek, here’s the official word on this weekend’s event at the Wayward:

An Evening of Authors, Wayward Coffeehouse, August 21, 7-10pm.
Hosted by Jennifer Brozek and Nate Crowder. Come to an evening of authors and good coffee at Wayward Coffeehouse. We will be reading from recent and forthcoming releases, answering questions and generally having a good time. Come one, come all and enjoy an evening with your local authors. Find out what’s next. Authors include: Cat Rambo, Rosemary Jones, Keffy R. M. Kehrli, Alma Alexander, Nate Crowder, Jeremy Zimmerman, R. Schuyler Devin, Leah Cutter, Sunder Cameron Addams and Angela Korra’ti.

I’ll be aiming for reading an excerpt from Chapter 1 of Faerie Blood–since the whole chapter is too long to fit into a 10-minute block, I’ll be starting partway in. And geez, check out the lineup of all the other folks who’ll be there! Especially Alma Alexander. I’m thrilled to be in such august company!

I realize this won’t be nearly so overtly exciting as shows from the local filk crowd, but hey, the Wayward is awesome, and I’m hoping to find several new interesting things to read! Not to mention getting a chance to say hi to not only local authors, but local readers as well. I hope to see a few of you there!

Whoa! Check out the lineup for the reading scheduled at the Wayward Coffeehouse on 8/21!

See that name at the end of that list? That would be me.

This is a gathering of Seattle-area authors arranged by , and big thanks go out to her for letting me in on the action. Also, to userinfovixyish for the initial heads up that pointed me in that direction!

Gosh. So, um, yeah, I guess I better figure out what exactly I’ll be reading. Come listen! I’ll arrange with my editor to bring a few copies of my book on CD so I can hand-sell them–and remember, y’all, I am an e-pubbed author, so so far only digital versions will be what I have available.

Hey folks, just wanted to put out one more reminder that there’s one week left until the release of Safe Upon the Shore by my B’ys of Great Big Sea–and therefore one week left in my Safe Upon the Shore of Faerie contest!

If it’ll help make up your minds, the fine folks over at greatbigsea.com have announced that you can preview the album in its entirety right over here. Go see if that inspires you, and if it does, come back and give me an entry! I’ve got only two entries at this point so chances of winning are very, VERY good. C’mon, folks, I want to hear from you!

Hey folks, I’ve gotten in a couple entries now on my Safe Upon the Shore of Faerie contest, but I’d really love to get more! Don’t forget, I’ll be taking entries until the release date of the new Great Big Sea album, which is July 13th!

Looking forward to seeing what other creative little snippets might show up on the post! And y’all should come over anyway and see what Jess and GutterBall have already submitted, ’cause they gave me some lovely little bits of prose, too!

Y’all know what banishes the sting of two rejection letters in one week? A CONTEST, that’s what!

If you’ve hung around my other blog or its LJ or Dreamwidth mirrors for more than five minutes, you’ll have figured out fast that I’m a raving fangirl for Great Big Sea, a high-energy Celtic/folk band out of Newfoundland. I love these guys with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns. I particularly love them right now, because on July 13th, they’re going to put out a brand new album.

And this is where you guys come in! When they announced the album’s release date, they also released a shot of the cover art. The very first thing that popped into my head when I saw it was “gosh, that looks like the cover of a novel, I wonder what the story of those two people is!” And I want all of you to tell me!

You can see the cover art right here, since the album’s available for preorder on Amazon. Go take a look. Then come back and give me one of the following:

  1. A hypothetical title for the novel this scene might come from
  2. A caption describing the scene
  3. A drabble-length description of the scene (that’s 100 words, for those of you not familiar with fanfic terminology)

Bonus points will be awarded for clever humor, use of any element of the Faerie Blood universe, or anything referenced in the titles or lyrics of Great Big Sea songs. Extra bonus points will be given for use of more than one of these!

The winner of the contest will receive either a copy of the album, a copy of Faerie Blood, or a copy of Defiance, their choice!

If the winner chooses the album, I will either buy them a copy directly off of greatbigsea.com, or else send a gift certificate to the vendor of their choice from which they may purchase it themselves. If the winner chooses a physical CD, I will require a snailmail address to which to send it.

If the winner chooses either of my books, I will provide an electronic copy of same in the format of their choice.

Here are the official rules and other important things you need to know:

  1. I will accept entries up until the album’s release date, July 13th.
  2. Please submit entries on the angelakorrati.com original post, NOT on the LJ or DW mirror posts. This is so I can track all the entries in one place!
  3. Please enter only once.
  4. I am the final judge for who gets to win!
  5. Please keep the entries worksafe.
  6. This contest is not in any way officially connected to greatbigsea.com, although I did contact them about it and received the blessing of their site admins. I am running this contest purely as an exercise of my fandom for the band, and will be buying the winner’s copy of the album at my own expense. :)
  7. If you’re already a GBS fan and you plan to buy a copy of the album anyway, don’t let this stop you from participating! Albums make excellent gifts.
  8. Ditto for if you already own either or both of my books!

(And oh yeah: if you haven’t heard GBS before, or if you want a taste of the new album to help you decide whether you want it, scamper up to greatbigsea.com and look for their streaming player. Three songs from the album are currently available there. The title track, “Safe Upon the Shore”, is my current favorite; it’s full of tasty, tasty harmony! Go check it out.)

This month’s Drollerie Press Blog Tour theme is Foolery: April Fool’s Day, playing jokes, pranks or mishaps or mischief that occur in your writing, and anything else our participants could think to come up with.

My contribution for the tour is a new character snippet upholding the theme: what happens when Jude Lawrence meets her new officemate Kendis Thompson, and discovers that she’s coming onto a team with a lively sense of humor. (This is what Jude gets for having a birthday on April 1st!)

Hope y’all enjoy! I figured it was about time Jude should have a character vignette!

Here’s another shot for y’all to win Faerie Blood if you’re up for it–but this time, the contest is being held by my beloved , who has finished a work EP for her forthcoming very first CD, to be titled Dick Tracy Must Die! Dara is recording every track on this thing singlehandedly, including vocals, bodhran, bouzouki, mandolin, flute, bass, and other instrumenty goodness. I am, frankly, in awe that she’s made herself sound like an entire band.

But she has! And she is Crime and the Forces of Evil! And her contest, wherein she’ll put folks into a drawing to win either a copy of her EP, a copy of my book, or a picture of our cats is over here. Check it out, and fear not, you can tell the Forces of Evil I sent you.

Announcement the first: It has come to my attention that a shiny new release by Seattle author , Battle of the Network Zombies, is being given away on both Amazon and Barnes and Noble’s ebook sites. So if you’re a Kindle or Nook owner, you might want to scamper over to your site of choice and grab this third installment of the Amanda Feral series! Then, if you really like it, go buy the print version. Because Seattle authors are awesome that way.

Announcement the second: Drollerie is participating in an auction for diabetes, being held by romantic suspense author Brenda Novak. Lots of tasty goodies are being put up for bid, stuff that should appeal to writers and readers alike, and it’s all for a good cause. If you’re interested in supporting this worthy endeavor, you can find out more over here. And if you want to see what Drollerie editor is putting up for bid, you can look here and here.

And last but most assuredly not least, announcement the third:

The winner of the What Should Anna Name Her Nook? poll is NOOKRONOMICON!

This means JGS is the winner of the poll! And since he elected to share his prize with Stickmaker, since Stickmaker built on his idea for the winning name, that means it’s a two-way prize split! Gentlemen, you may each have one of the previous listed prizes:

  • Free electronic copies of both Faerie Blood and Defiance in the format of your choice
  • A free print copy of anything Drollerie currently has in print
  • A $25 gift certificate to the Drollerie Press bookstore

Please to contact me through appropriate channels to let me know what your choice is, and appropriate contact data to which to send your prize! Thanks all for participating!

Okay all, here we go with the official What Should Anna Name Her Nook? poll! Here are the rules:

  1. If you’re reading this anywhere besides angelakorrati.com, please click through to the original post to cast your vote. As always, I’m putting it on my official site to accommodate non-LJ or LJ-site-like users who don’t have the ability to answer polls in LJ-style sites without being members of them.
  2. Although this might be self-evident, if you want to vote, do please actually cast your vote in the poll. Votes cast in the comments will not count, and that also goes for votes cast in the comments of any mirrors of the original post.
  3. All voters may cast up to three votes for their favorite choices.
  4. The poll will remain open until midnight, March 1st, Pacific/Cascadia time.
  5. The winner of the poll will be announced on March 1st, and will be given three days to get their contact data to me so that I can arrange to get them their prize! If I don’t hear from the winner in that time frame, I’ll move on to whoever was next in line with the vote count. (However, if that occurs, I retain authorial privilege to keep the original winning name for the Nook if I so prefer.)

And to review the prizes, the winner may have one of three things, their choice:

  1. Free electronic copies of both Faerie Blood and Defiance, in the format of their choice. I have PDFs of both immediately available, and ePub for Faerie Blood. I can also get copies in Microsoft Reader, Mobipocket, and Sony Reader formats.
  2. A free print copy of any Drollerie Press book currently available.
  3. A $25 gift certificate to the Drollerie Press bookstore.

Let’s get to it then, shall we? The poll is behind the fold, and is also now displayed on the sidebar of angelakorrati.com, so you can get to it either way! Make with the voting, y’all!

So the whole Amazon vs. Macmillan fracas has accomplished three things for me, as of last night:

One, I have bought a nook. The cost of said nook as well as a loverly cover to put it in is roughly about the same as the amount of royalties I have now received for Faerie Blood, and to a tiny degree, Defiance.

(Which of course means that this is the Nook That Faerie Blood Bought, folks. That you all helped me buy. And for this, I thank you all! Watch this space for a forthcoming new poll on what exactly I should name the Nook, and a likely giveaway for a randomly selected winner!)

Two, I’ve also bought five, count ‘em, five ebooks by Macmillan authors, up on Fictionwise.

Three, and because I’m really in the mood to show some love directly to awesome authors, I have thrown ten bucks at the current efforts of to sell her commissioned novella “Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight”. It’s set in her Old Races universe and features Janx and Daisani, and she’s selling it directly off her site for ten bucks a pop this month. Hie ye over here and show her some support, y’all!

“But Anna,” I hear you cry, “ten bucks a pop for a novella? Isn’t that more than I’d be paying for a paperback?” Yes. Yes it is. But the beauty of this is, since Kit is selling it directly, she gets every last penny, and since she has an established track record of about a dozen books’ worth of awesome, I’m pretty damn sure $10 for a novella full of her words will be worth the price.

Also, she’s Kit. So go, my Internet armies! And tell her I sent you!
