Better

Back to Bone Walker exclusively tonight, just because that’s where the words seemed to want to go. Still working on the fight scene between Christopher, Kendis, and the nogitsune, and figuring out how to choreograph the actions so that a) they all move farther along the trail to the north, and b) Melisanda has an opportunity to show up and help them drive off the last of the nogitsune. Not quite there yet but at least there was more than a page’s worth of progress tonight.

I kind of want to push for 500 words tonight, but on the other hand, I need to go to bed. And also, I think it’ll actually encourage me more to write tomorrow if I can maintain this feeling of “more writing needs doing!” It’s all about the pacing myself.

When I find myself staring dully and tiredly at the screen and no words are flowing, that’s the signal that it’s time to go to bed. But I did at least make a few words go tonight! And even if about 100 words into each of these things doesn’t seem like much individually, it will at least add up if I keep at it. That’s good advice to keep telling myself.

Let’s see if I can do this again tomorrow.

I’ve been frustrated enough with my months-long block on regular writing that I figured tonight I should try the multi-novelling trick. That’s helped in the past, and I felt it was long past time to try it again, just for the sake of advancing some pointers on various works on progress. I’ve mentioned before how it’s often helpful for me to just try to do little chunks at a time–and tonight, I was pleased to note that it worked again.

So yeah, a small number of words for Bone Walker, Mirror’s Gate, and Shadow of the Rook out of the novels in progress–and a few more for the as of yet untitled story about my Psychic Chick of Size. Whose name is, by the way, Elizabeth Breckenridge. Her male lead is Ross Taggart, and so far what I know about him is that he’s actually too heavy himself (because if there’s anything as rare as a fat heroine in a fantasy story, it’s an overweight hero) by thirty or forty pounds, and that he’s either a private investigator or a reporter or maybe a blogger. I’m not sure which yet. Waiting to see if anything pops out of my head as I throw words at the story.

And we’ll have to see if I finish it in time to submit it to userinfothunderpigeon and userinfodr_pretentious for their anthology.

Meanwhile, the word stats:

Not as many as last night’s, but hey, there are words and that’s a good thing. And I do hope these are acceptable words. Mostly, they feature heading into the confrontation between Kendis, Christopher, and the nogitsune! It all worked out to about a page added to the Chapter 7 file, and I’m slowly closing in on 20K for the book.

This’ll do

More words thrown into Bone Walker tonight, and for once I actually topped the 500 mark. Still in Chapter 7, but now I’ve gotten the nogitsune on camera, and Christopher and Kendis are about to meet another important character to this plot, one of the last few I need to have show up.

Tonight also marks the first time I actually broke out the Street View of Google Maps to give me an idea of what to write, since I’ve got K. and C. bolting towards Lake Washington through a residential stretch of blocks right on the border between Seattle proper and Lake Forest Park. Useful, this, even if the Street View does not of course go all the way to the Burke-Gilman trail.

Only a couple hundred words written tonight, but I am pleased nonetheless!

I know I keep saying this, but let’s see if I can hold to it for a while now that the new year is under way, eh?

Back into Bone Walker tonight, with Chapter 7 underway. I’ve got me a Kendis with a head full of stuff she’d really rather not have to be dealing with all at the same time, and a bit about how the magic of Warding a city works, and a bit of Seattle geography all touched upon in the five hundred words I’ve written tonight. This felt good. Let’s see if I can do it again tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in case y’all haven’t seen it yet, we’re handing out free downloads of my story “The Disenchanting of Princess Cerridwen” right over here for the 11th day of Drollerie Christmas! I know, I’m already handing it out for free here, but userinfoserasempre said such nice things about the story that I really just sort of have to go “aw”. *^_^*;;

And oh yeah, did y’all see the new poll I have up in the sidebar? (Go here for those of you who are reading this from LJ or DW.)

In a bigger than normal burst of words tonight, I’ve actually finished up Chapter 6 of Bone Walker. Mostly, this features Kendis having a quiet but significant realization about the state of things between her and Christopher, one that has hit her at a less than opportune time–like these things tend to do. Which is about all I’ll say about that, because hey, spoilers!

I did actually have to do a bit of followup Googling on the whole cell phone issue, though. Wound up needing to toss off a throwaway line about Kendis taking a picture of something with her phone, and caught myself thinking ‘guh okay, can she do that with a phone in 2003?’ Survey (and consulting of userinfosolarbird) says yes. This is what I get for the book being time-shifted back six years, and also for me never getting a phone of my own until 2006!

Anyway, chapter’s done. We’ll see if I can start Chapter 7 some time tomorrow! And since tomorrow’s also Longest Night, this should mean amusing things for my potential word count. But I also have to write a post for the Drollerie Blog Tour this month, so we’ll see!

Briefly

Because I was totally distracted by Fictionwise’s shiny on-sale ebook goodness and then by Twitter asploding, I got started later on tonight’s words than I wanted, and now I really need to go to bed!

A few more words tonight than last night, which pleases me; also, there are smoochies in these words! And the amusement of trying to figure out how to describe that why yes, Kendis and Christopher are healthy young people with healthy young hormones, but in a laid-back, retro kind of way rather than a “these two are about to rip each other’s shirts off” kind of way. ‘Cause, y’know, I’m old school like that.

Also of amusement: trying to remember that since Faerie Blood was written in 2003 and early 2004 and therefore is really technically set in 2003, this means Bone Walker is late 2003 too. Which means that I need to resist the temptation to think of Kendis’ cell phone as a shiny 2009-style cell phone, because it ain’t. I could handwave it and just skip ahead to 2009, except that I do actually have a throwaway line in Faerie Blood about Kendis being five years old when Mt. St. Helens blows, and she’s 28 in that book. And I’m too much of a stickler for continuity to dismiss that. So!

Now, since an unfortunately timed text message has interrupted the aforementioned smoochies, to figure out how to get our heroine and hero off to the next scene, and finding the nogitsune. By now, I mean, ‘tomorrow’.

Only a couple hundred words again tonight, but given how erratic my pace has been all year, hey, a couple hundred words is a good thing! Chapter 6 inches along, and in tonight’s brief fragment, I do believe I’m getting an opportunity to showcase how Christopher and Kendis’ relationship will have progressed a bit since Book 1. I also just had a bit of a thought as to what’ll need to happen next as they try (and fail) to followup on what just happened to Jude… and there will be segueing into some Warder business as I bring the nogitsune on camera. Which is a bit to work into a single chapter; this may spill over into Chapter 7! We’ll see.

Because I’m peeved that a cold has thrown me off of my writing AGAIN, and because I didn’t want to go to bed without throwing at least a few words at the book, I bumped up the word count on Bone Walker by a couple hundred. Mostly, this gave me time to let Kendis discover a new thing about Christopher: he can get jealous!

And technically, I wrote sixty or so words of this the other day, but I never actually transcribed them out of the Moleskine, so I’m only counting them now. Because I can.

So yeah, after falling hard off the wagon in mid-November, I’ve had a devil of a time trying to get re-organized for getting back on again. Tonight is my attempt to get that started, ’cause this book? It ain’t writing itself.

Not much done tonight, but I did at least update my outline for Bone Walker a bit, to try to get the initial chapters to reflect what I’ve actually written and lay down the ground work for extrapolating ahead. And I threw a couple hundred words into Chapter Six. Not bad considering I was brain dead for most of the day thanks to staying home with a sore throat, and that I need to go to bed now.

Hopefully more tomorrow!

For the record: it’s pretty clear to me at this point that I’m not hitting that 50K, especially after not having written a word since this past Friday! A good chunk of the cause for this is of course because I scampered off to see my favorite band perform this past Saturday, and that blew any chance of getting any work done right out of my head! And for various reasons, I haven’t written anything since, either.

Tomorrow is of course American Thanksgiving, so it’s highly doubtful I’ll get anything done tomorrow, either. I shall see about resuming work on Bone Walker over the weekend, though, once we get past Turkey Day. I’m about to the point anyway where I need to take a step back and update the outline, and figure out how what I’ve written so far will affect the next several chapters.

Those of you still plugging away at Nanowrimo, good luck to you! Those of you who’ve crossed the finish line, congrats! And to all of you celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow, may your companionship be fine and your dinner tasty, whatever that dinner may be!

Well, I’m at the halfway mark, and it seems apparent to me at this point that 50K by the end of the month isn’t too likely given how my daily rate has gone so far this month. But on the other hand, I’ve continued to write every day so far this month–and this weekend in particular, I’ve had a particularly good run with nearly 2,500 words yesterday and a K today.

This puts me at 13K and change. At minimum, if I make 500 words a day every day for the rest of the month, I should make about 22K–but I’m thinking 26K is not out of the question. I’m going to keep going, regardless. The Nano cred would be shiny, but finishing Faerie Blood’s first sequel? Shinier.

I’m about to finish up Chapter 5 as of tonight. Jude’s life has just gotten quite a bit more difficult, though she doesn’t realize it yet. And I’ve enjoyed writing a tender moment between Christopher and a very worried Kendis. More updates as they happen!
