Drollerie Press giveaway, and also, a bit of sales data!

So over at Drollerie Press we’re in the middle of a 12 Days of Christmas giveaway, featuring several free downloads by a lot of us DP authors–and which will culminate in the giveaway of a free ebook reader a bunch of us are chipping in for! It’s a jetBook Lite, and you can find out more about it and the giveaway in general here. Skim all the site’s recent entries for the downloads available so far!
Meanwhile, I’ve finally gotten a bit of sales data from my editor , who informs me that during 3rd Quarter 2009, I sold 148 copies at Fictionwise! This means I now have 165 confirmed sales so far–and this isn’t counting anything from Mobipocket or Amazon or other sites, not to mention Drollerie’s own store during that period. So when the royalty statement finally shows up, I’m hopeful it’ll have some interesting numbers indeed.
For the home audience–this means that by very rough estimation, I’d be getting somewhere in the vicinity of $375 for these confirmed sales. And if I can confirm another 335 or so, this gets me into the territory of Anna Can Buy a New Guitar. Y’all want me to have one of these lovely things, don’t you?
Well, if you’ve bought Faerie Blood, this is exactly what you’ll be contributing to, and I have not forgotten my pledge in the earliest days of this blog of mine that if I do get that guitar, I will totally post video of myself playing it. And I’ll very likely also do another poll and giveaway, because let’s face it, folks, this will be a guitar you all helped me buy. Which means you totally should have a shot at helping me name it.
Ultimately, though, the really important thing to note here is that holy crap 165 of you out there have bought my book. I really hope you’re all enjoying it! And I thank you for your support.
Special bonus Drollerie Blog tour post: Elisa Diehl!

One of my fellow Drollerie authors, Meredith Holmes, unfortunately was in the hospital this week with a pulmonary embolism. So she was unable to participate in the Blog Tour this time around, and since she was scheduled to host Elisa Diehl, I’m going to take care of hosting Elisa’s post instead. Check it out, folks!
And also, stop by Meredith’s place and wish her well. ‘Cause hospitals are never fun, especially this close to Christmas.
Take it away, Elisa!
December Drollerie Blog Tour: Imogen Howson on Hades and Persephone
| December 21, 2009 | Posted by annathepiper under Drollerie Press |
Those of you who know about my completed but unpublished novels will know I’ve got Queen of Souls, a Persephone and Hades story on the queue to be edited into queryable shape. So it should surprise none of you that I’m quite interested in checking out Frayed Tapestry, by my fellow Drollerie author Imogen Howson. In fact, as the cool kids like to say, her post for this month’s Drollerie Blog Tour, on the topic of dangerous writing, is Relevant to My Interests indeed.
Check it out, folks! Here’s what Imogen’s got to say.
Chapter 6 stands complete!
| December 20, 2009 | Posted by annathepiper under Bone Walker |

In a bigger than normal burst of words tonight, I’ve actually finished up Chapter 6 of Bone Walker. Mostly, this features Kendis having a quiet but significant realization about the state of things between her and Christopher, one that has hit her at a less than opportune time–like these things tend to do. Which is about all I’ll say about that, because hey, spoilers!
I did actually have to do a bit of followup Googling on the whole cell phone issue, though. Wound up needing to toss off a throwaway line about Kendis taking a picture of something with her phone, and caught myself thinking ‘guh okay, can she do that with a phone in 2003?’ Survey (and consulting of ) says yes. This is what I get for the book being time-shifted back six years, and also for me never getting a phone of my own until 2006!
Anyway, chapter’s done. We’ll see if I can start Chapter 7 some time tomorrow! And since tomorrow’s also Longest Night, this should mean amusing things for my potential word count. But I also have to write a post for the Drollerie Blog Tour this month, so we’ll see!
Written last night: 238

Because I was totally distracted by Fictionwise’s shiny on-sale ebook goodness and then by Twitter asploding, I got started later on tonight’s words than I wanted, and now I really need to go to bed!

Technology, timelines, and smoochings
| December 16, 2009 | Posted by annathepiper under Bone Walker |
A few more words tonight than last night, which pleases me; also, there are smoochies in these words! And the amusement of trying to figure out how to describe that why yes, Kendis and Christopher are healthy young people with healthy young hormones, but in a laid-back, retro kind of way rather than a “these two are about to rip each other’s shirts off” kind of way. ‘Cause, y’know, I’m old school like that.
Also of amusement: trying to remember that since Faerie Blood was written in 2003 and early 2004 and therefore is really technically set in 2003, this means Bone Walker is late 2003 too. Which means that I need to resist the temptation to think of Kendis’ cell phone as a shiny 2009-style cell phone, because it ain’t. I could handwave it and just skip ahead to 2009, except that I do actually have a throwaway line in Faerie Blood about Kendis being five years old when Mt. St. Helens blows, and she’s 28 in that book. And I’m too much of a stickler for continuity to dismiss that. So!
Now, since an unfortunately timed text message has interrupted the aforementioned smoochies, to figure out how to get our heroine and hero off to the next scene, and finding the nogitsune. By now, I mean, ‘tomorrow’.

Only a couple hundred words again tonight, but given how erratic my pace has been all year, hey, a couple hundred words is a good thing! Chapter 6 inches along, and in tonight’s brief fragment, I do believe I’m getting an opportunity to showcase how Christopher and Kendis’ relationship will have progressed a bit since Book 1. I also just had a bit of a thought as to what’ll need to happen next as they try (and fail) to followup on what just happened to Jude… and there will be segueing into some Warder business as I bring the nogitsune on camera. Which is a bit to work into a single chapter; this may spill over into Chapter 7! We’ll see.

Check it out, you guys, pictoral proof that why yes, Drollerie authors can indeed get books in print! My fellow Drollerie author Joely Sue Burkhart, who y’all may recall from assorted blog tour posts, is having herself a giveaway for a print copy of her novel The Rose of Shanhasson–follow the link to drop a comment on her post if you’re interested in a shot at winning one!
And tell her I sent you.
More Bone Walker, briefly

Because I’m peeved that a cold has thrown me off of my writing AGAIN, and because I didn’t want to go to bed without throwing at least a few words at the book, I bumped up the word count on Bone Walker by a couple hundred. Mostly, this gave me time to let Kendis discover a new thing about Christopher: he can get jealous!
And technically, I wrote sixty or so words of this the other day, but I never actually transcribed them out of the Moleskine, so I’m only counting them now. Because I can.

Please help Peter Watts

A lot of you reading this will probably see this posted elsewhere, but just in case you haven’t, word is going around the Net today about how Canadian SF writer Peter Watts was stopped at the US/Canadian border on his way back into Canada, beaten by border guards, and released in his shirtsleeves into the middle of a snowstorm. Various pertinent links include:
I’d previously downloaded the four Creative Commons copies of Peter’s novels from his site, and have elected to send him a Paypal donation for roughly the amount I’d have paid for these books if I’d bought them in paperback in a store. If like me you are deeply appalled that this happened to him, I would encourage you to consider sending him whatever you can spare as he gets a defense fund together.
More formal efforts to get something organized for him are underway, but in the meantime, he has a Paypal donation button here. If you use it, please also send him a separate note specifying that you’re donating to his legal fund since the button was originally set up for veterinary bills for his cats.
Thanks, folks. Let’s hope this works out for the best.
ETA 12/12/09 11:47am: Peter has posted again with an update, specifically touching on how a Michigan newspaper story on the incident is telling a version of events that contradicts what he said happened. He’s clearing up a couple other points as well, and voicing his thanks to folks who have given him support.
