Whoa hey, Fictionwise loves me

So according to this page over here, I’m currently #18 on the list of Fictionwise’s bestsellers in the Fantasy genre, based on data slurped up over the last 20 days. I have no earthly idea what this means in terms of actual hard numbers of copies sold, but still, it’s pretty nifty. And it’s causing me a bit of cognitive dissonance just to see myself appearing on a page that also includes the words ‘Best Sellers in Fantasy’, ‘Lilith Saintcrow’, ‘Mercedes Lackey’, ‘Charlaine Harris’, and ‘Rachel Caine’. *^_^*;;

This should make my first royalty statement interesting reading, anyway! It would seem to indicate that somebody out there is indeed buying my little book. To all of you who have done so, I thank you!

And, for posterity, got a couple of screenshots!

    • Thanks! I’m horribly curious about what this means in terms of actual sales, but I guess I’ll find that out when I get my first royalty statement! *^_^*;;

  1. Actually you’re up to #15 at the moment, which is fantastic.

    Be patient in that royalty payments seem to arrive later than promised. For the sales you made today, mark the last day of November for the check, and keep on writing. :^)

    • Yeah, moving up to #15 got pointed out to me last night, which gave me more cognitive dissonance, because HEY WAIT I’m right below Rachel Caine on a bestseller list and how exactly did that happen anyway?! and such. ;)

      In theory I’m supposed to be seeing a royalty statement some time soon, but we’ll see when that shows up. And I am indeed writing.

      • You should expect to see a 2nd quarter (April -> June) statement by the end of August if you’re experience mirrors my own. I only had my first tile published on the last Monday of March, meaning I had one title for sale for less than one week in the first quarter.

        I now have 10 titles up, with an 11th coming out Monday August 24. None have done as well as you’re doing, but my plan is to make up in volume what I miss in any individual title. Then there will be a 12 week gap, after which 2 of my best titles yet will come out a week apart near the end of November – both as eBooks and POD print.

        My publisher has an excellent deal with CreateSpace for print-on-demand titles. The setup fee is only $10 to $15 depending on length, and you get all the royalties from any sales. Very little downside risk, and the list price is set to provide the same royalty on a printed book sale as on an eBook sale.

        • Yeah, end of this month or early September is about what I’m expecting as per information from my editor. That statement ought to be pretty teeny since my book was originally released over Memorial Day weekend, and things didn’t really start getting interesting until this month. So the end of December statement, that one will be the fun one.

          It sounds like you have a decent enough plan going, good luck with all of your sales! Who’s your publisher?

          • I publish through eXcessica Publishing. While they’re overall considered pretty far out in pushing the explicit boundaries, they’re willing to take me on for my rather unconventional romantic situations (rather than explain that further, I’ll let my author’s page speak for me at: http://excessica.com/index.php/search-by-author/db-story/ ). My stories tend to be sweetly romantic, but because of their unconventional relationships get higher heat ratings than I’d prefer for them. Some very good straight romantic authors such as Molly Wens publish through eXcessica for now, as well as those with a different take on fantasy such as Marshall Ian Key. I view us as a collection of oddballs with very different styles who all found a home in the same place. They become someone to try if you’re turned down by your present publisher with future stories since their publishing model (you can read about it on their site) leaves the risk with the author which makes them more flexible than many other publishers when it comes to material.

            And if the erotic and explicit is not what you want your work associated with, they are starting a new label that is for everything that’s not the erotic/explicit type material. It’s terms will be slightly different than eXcessica, but still quite favorable.

            Btw, if you don’t get an answer here from me to some post, e-mail me since I might not have seen your question.

            • Heh, “erotic and explicit” is definitely not for me; there’s not only not any sex in my work, there’s barely any kissing. ;)

              I’m pretty happy with Drollerie, but thanks for the tip about your publisher’s forthcoming non-erotica line; who knows, another site visitor might find the information helpful.

  2. Making another comment now even though I already congratulated you on LJ. Did you notice that you’re now up to #15?
